Washington, D.C. raised Duke Ellington around the U Street corridor, once known as Black Broadway, and Marvin Gaye was born in the District. Chuck Brown invented go-go in the city's clubs, a syncopated funk style still woven into its identity. In the 1980s, Bad Brains, Minor Threat, and Fugazi built a DIY hardcore movement that Dischord Records carried nationwide.
